Miracles

Main points:
  1. Miracles is a controversial topic. Many, if not all, scriptures are filled with description of miracles. Rationalists could consider miracles as an illogical and unrealistic aspect of religion.
  2. A miracle by definition is an event which cannot be explained by natural or physical laws. Not all laws are known today, and many will be discovered in future. So common knowledge of tomorrow may appear a miracle today.
  3. I believe miracles is a non-issue. Miracles are done by God. Once a person has accepted existence of God, the Creator of all there is, then possibility of miracles is always there. There will not be much that a Creator of world is incapable to doing.
  4. In fact, by definition, a God should be able to work miracles, and bend the natural laws. Anyone unable to create or bend laws of nature is not God.
  5. If a person has not accepted existence of an Omnipotent God then the person would not believe in miracles. In this case, belief in existence or non-existence of God has to be resolved first, which is an unsolved and much more important problem than finding out whether miracles exist.
  6. Miracles are not done by human beings (or spirits or other possible entities, if they exist). I believe anyone claiming to work miracles should be met with scepticism. Miracle working by human beings is most likely work of tricks (which is team work, or sleight of hand) or just use of obscure or hidden technology. When a scripture describes a miracle, it always points out that it was a work of God, and not a prophet or saint. A saint or prophet always describe unexplained incidents (miracles) as a work of God.
  7. Having said all of the above things, I believe there still remains a grey area, because my knowledge is limited. There are stories of miracles as an answer to prayers, stories of healing, curses, or other spiritual powers. I believe whatever they are, if they are true, they are based on working of laws not yet clearly known to me and also not known to most other people. Some people claim to understand them, some people claim to have some powers, but there is nothing conclusive in this area, and it is a matter of experimenting oneself and finding out. If these things are true they will be just like building muscles or practising an art form, the more you practice, the better you get. There are laws of prayer, laws of healing, or laws of breathing, etc. Whatever one decides to explore, one should remember that a life is short, and it is better to use it well, than waste it in chasing mirages. I have personally tried prayers and healing, but here too the actual miracle, if it happens, is done by God, as an answer to a prayer. Anybody can pray, but not all prayers are answered - A parent does not buy every toy that a child asks for!
  8. Regarding spiritual powers, I personally believe their only value, if they exist, is satisfying curiosity or performing unexplained tricks in this lifetime (without any eternal value); none of the prophets or saints spent time doing them nor widely taught them, so probably they are not worth spending time on, in my opinion.
  9. A final word on miracles - there is a concept in eastern spirituality called "Riddhi-Siddhi", which are a group of miraculous spiritual powers. Theoretically, there are many different ways for achieving them, like breath control, meditation, etc, but their utility is limited to current lifetime. They do not bring any eternal benefit to the practitioner, and instead could cause occurrence of incidents which may have adverse consequences for the practitioner in the long term. From a technical perspective these are not miracles, but just practices that have not been widely understood, and there are specific steps of achieving them. But few would be willing to explore and share the learning, as most such systems are based on secrecy, and as with all such things secret, the efficacy of such teachings is doubtful. The best way to achieve these spiritual powers, as per Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, is by hearing and contemplating the Name of God (related verses given in this article). The best protection from such powers is also prayer and chanting the Name of God. From practical perspective it is very unlikely that we will come across a person who possesses these powers, nor is it likely that any of us would come to possess them (maybe not because the methods do not work, but because of lack of trying, motivation, and practice). I have never met such a person (who possesses any such powers), nor I expect to meet anyone. We only hear stories that cannot be verified. Hankering for them is pointless as their utility is limited, and this hankering should be actively avoided as it could actually become a roadblock to real useful spiritual progress, and is more like a unhealthy fixation or ambition. For a monotheistic believer, the Name of God, is the miraculous spiritual power.
-
Following verses from Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji present different perspectives on miracles, and my understanding of the same. In recent years there has been a practice of some religious community members to appear practical and rational, and thus they either ignore references to miracles in their own scripture, or say that the text describing miracle is symbolic (and not literal). In an attempt to appear scientific, some ignore their own scripture. Appearing scientific seems fashionable, but science too has plenty of unanswered questions.

But I personally believe anyone who believes in a Monotheistic, All powerful Creator of the world, God, cannot deny possibility of miracles done by God. Surely the Creator of the world should be able to do anything in His creation, bend the laws at will, and answer any prayers should He choose to! But we should always doubt the possibility of a miracle done by a human being, as a human being is bound by natural and physical laws, and for most part there is no reason why a human being can transcend a natural or physical law.

ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਉ ਜੀਵਾਲਨਹਾਰ ॥

Translation:

Gives life to the dead.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 283:30]
=======================================
Commentary:

In this verse God is described as someone who is capable of giving life to the dead. If we think about it, God, who is someone who has created the entire world and all the life in it, will obviously be able to influence life and death.

If a person thinks that God is incapable of making life and death decisions for a person, or is unable to reverse these states, then probably the person does not believe in a God (as per monotheistic faith). A God bound by rules and laws of this world is not God as per monotheism (I have no knowledge of polytheism, and cannot comment on deities of polytheism).

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 1165:18-30]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells story of a devout devotee, Prahlaad. Prahlaad did not focus on learning prescribed by the powerful king, his father, and instead devoted time in practicing devotion to God. The king, Harnaakash, tries to kill his son for disobedience by throwing him off a cliff, into water and into fire. But each time God changes the laws of nature to protect Prahlaad. Finally the king tries to kill Prahlaad with his sword, but God appears and kills the king.

This is a famous story about Bhagat Prahlaad in Indian scriptures, and it has been recounted in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji also. I believe multiple versions of story exit. The reason to include this story here is to convey the point that miracles, like divine protection in this story, is the work of God and not of a human being. Second reason to include this story is to illustrate the point that scriptures do talk about miracles.

This test is only acceptable,
Emperor, walk in truth, humility.24.

Then faith in Nam Dev would have gone.26.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 1165:31-51, 1166:1-37]
=======================================
Commentary:

This is another story in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji illustrating a dead cow coming back to life. An apparent miracle, but it was work of God. The king, sultan, challenges Bhagat Nam Dev to show works of his God. King gets a cow killed and challenges Bhagat Nam Dev to bring the cow back to life. King notes that if the cow does not come to life, then he would get the saint killed.

Bhagat Namdev tells the king that only God can do miracles. Finally God appears and brings cow back to life. As king asks for forgiveness, Bhagat Nam Dev tells the king that this test is acceptable only if the king learns to walk and live in truth and humility. This verse also emphasises that miracles are done by God.

Commentary:

This verse highlights another miracle that is widely documented in scriptures of different religions in the Indian sub-continent. Paanchali, a queen, was wagered by her husband in a game of dice and lost. The winners planned to disrespect Paanchali in front of the court, but she prayed to God for help, and God protected her. The details vary from scripture to scripture, and have not been documented in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. But all scriptures agree that God performed a miracle to save a helpless woman in front of the king's entire court.

This verse tells that by contemplating and remembering God in meditation, a person can receive the supernatural powers known as Ridh Sidh and Nidh. It may be noted that remembering Name of God, Praising God, remembering God are similar tasks and complementary to each other. These powers have been described as:

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells the benefits of hearing the Name of God, and that it results in material as well as in spiritual benefits to a person (including supernatural powers). The Name of God is obtained from Guru's teaching. For Sikhs the Guru is Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and Guru Granth Sahib Ji gives details of different Names of Supreme God.

It is my belief that anyone willing to accept and respect the teaching of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is welcome to consider Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their own Guru. I am not a very religious person, but I have found that words of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji have been very helpful for me, and have provided me guidance during my times of need and at other times also. Readers can search and access the translation and original verses online.

Some of the Names of Supreme God used in Guru Granth Sahib Ji are Satnam, Ram, Allah, and many others, and can be found in the following Youtube videos: https://youtu.be/DEKgmvT0cZk and https://youtu.be/OF7fNxSKtKk. Reader is encouraged to read Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to know the different Names of God.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse highlights the same point as described in previous points. There are many verses in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji which highlight these points, and I have included some of them here.

A True Guru, or teacher, is considered same as God. The definitions are nuanced and beyond the scope of current article, but remembering the True Guru is same as remembering Supreme God.

These verses give details of complementary actions like chanting Name of God, Praising God, hearing the Name of God, remembering God or True Guru, among others, all of which result in the practitioner gaining miraculous powers. How much time and effort would be needed for these powers to manifest? I am not sure.

Commentary:

This verse instructs the mind to chant 'Guru', or Name of the Guru, to receive supernatural powers and wisdom. The True Guru is an aspect of Supreme God which instructs and guides us.

Wisdom (Budhi) is again characterized by following qualities or aspects (List and explanation taken from https://gurmatbibek.com/forum/read.php?3,36418):

Bharosa - faith and dependence on God.
Leenta - an absolute attachment (absorption) to God.
Santokh - contentment.
Detachment - from the dear ones and the worldly possessions.
Hukam - acceptance of the will of God. It is total surrender to Him.
Sehaj - equilibrium, equipoise.
Anand - perpetual delight, permanent joy.
Vismaad - ecstasy, joy plus wonderment.
Nidar - benevolence of God. He believes in the mercy of God as an instrument of his attainments, and that his own efforts mean nothing.

This verse tells that people who take support of God's Name are protected by God. This protection includes all protection, protection from physical or supernatural things or powers. I understand words, "take support", as believing in God, believing in power of Name of God, chanting and remembering the Name of God, specially in one's time of distress or need, and in prayer.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells that when God's Name rests in a person's mind, then this in itself is a occult power and a miracle (By resting in mind means, accepting Name of God as a Supreme support).

This verse is difficult to understand, without more context and information, and I only present the translation of verses related to supernatural powers.

=14===============================================================
==================================================================
ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਸਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
-----------------
Translation:
Miraculous powers, occult powers are all worldly attachments, Name does not rest, or come to mind.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 593:32]
=======================================
Commentary:

Final verse in this post deals with the risks of pursuing supernatural and miraculous powers. If a person tries to possess them, then they are worldly attachments which can hinder a person's spiritual progress. They can result from spiritual life of a person, but in themselves they are just worldly attachments or possessions which will not benefit the soul, as they deal with physical and material attainments only.

People could feel that pursuing these powers is a spiritual or religious path, but in fact it is not, as this verse warns. By going after these powers, a person risks losing attachment to Name of God, which is a terrible misfortune. So this verse guides a spiritual person to understand and accept the Name of God, and stay away from pursuing (or using) spiritual and miraculous powers.

Who am I?

Main points:
  1. Who is a human being? Who am I? This is a fundamental question that many people ponder. This post would present a perspective shared by Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and my understanding of the concepts.
  2. Difference between a person and God, is similar to difference between a ripple and water. Ripple has its own existence which is an extension or projection of water. Within context of this analogy, assuming water is eternal, ripple is ephemeral while water is permanent.
  3. Second analogy describing relationship between a person and God, is that of a gold ornament and gold. Same material, gold, is used to fashion many different ornaments. Ornaments could be melted multiple times to make new ornaments, while the essential quality of underlying material, gold, remains the same.
  4. A ripple attached to its own form of an ephemeral ripple will be troubled by realizing that its existence is for a finite time. A ripple which identifies itself as part of water, will find rest even if it merges back in water.
  5. A person is separated from God by own previous actions. Union with God is the only option to provide a stable state to a person.

Following verses from Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji present different perspectives to understand self. One important aspect while reading scripture is that the mind has to deal with multiple perspectives and analogies which sometimes are not always comprehensible or may appear contradictory. I find it is a good practice to read scripture with an open mind, take in the ideas without judging them immediately, and letting mind work on them. As time passes and mind gets a chance to think through the concepts, the ideas become clearer.

Body contemplates, give me this wisdom,
Ravidas, parts are same, some rare one instructs.3.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 93:27-34]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells the difference between God and a person (and soul). The soul is the entity which has the ego, and is aware of its separate existence as a person or being. God is the Supreme God, the Creator of the world. The difference between God and a person (soul) is like difference between water and a ripple on the water surface, or like a gold ornament and gold.

In a way the ripple and the ornament are definitely water and gold respectively, but the form and life of ripple and ornament is short-lived. A ripple merges back in water, while an ornament gets melted to create new ornaments.

The verse tells of unique relationship between a Devotee and God. God is revealed by His devotees, while a devotee's power rests in God. Whatever a devotee seems to accomplish and becomes famous for, is the work of God. If a devotee worships a powerless god, the accomplishments would have more talk than substance.

At the end of the verse, Bhagat Ravidaas asks for this wisdom, and points out that few can impart this wisdom, that the parts are same as the whole.

When we are, then You are not, now only You, I am not,
Intense gust, like wave in ocean, only water in water.1.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 657:43-44]
=======================================
Commentary:

When a person focuses on its form of a limited and temporary wave, it misses to see itself as part of the larger eternal ocean. When the soul focuses on its form being part of the ocean, then existence and limitations of a small wave lose significance and disappear. This is an easy concept to explain and understand, but difficult to experience and internalize.

The veil which keeps a soul separated from God, is its own ego. A soul finds it very difficult to see something larger which is based on dissolving its own existence first. It can happen in an instant, or it can take a lot of time.

=======================================
Commentary:

The verse explains that people come and go as per God's command. Coming and going also refer to birth and death. By command I understand a set of natural and physical laws which govern this world. And it is by understanding these laws that people can act such that they are free from transmigration. The laws have been created by God, and are referred as God's commands in the verse.

One of the laws is that people will reap what they harvest. Another law is that salvation depends on whether a human being believes in the power of the Name of God, well enough to be able to remember the Name when it matters. It is only by understanding these laws that a ripple can happily merge back in water, transcending the life of the humble ripple.

This verse highlights that The Monotheistic Diety is One by definition, irrespective of number of Names used by different religions and denominations to identify The Supreme Diety.

Another aspect presented in this verse is that all saints and prophets of The Monotheistic Deity deserve our respect and admiration, irrespective of religion or denomination. We can learn from all of them.

Translation:

We children, my God, Lord, Father, give me understanding, by which I may find God.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 1118:10]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse again tells that we are like children of God. The verse goes on to ask God for understanding, so that a person might find God. This is an important message in this verse. If we do not ask for understanding, do not seek it, then it is unlikely that we will get understanding. If we do not want to find God, then it is unlikely he will reveal Himself. We need to seek God with the mind of a child, and not like a proud adult.

Few people with a rational bend of mind might scoff at the idea of humbling self before an imaginary entity like God, to seek understanding. A rational mind would rather seek to find concrete steps, which can be replicated at will in a controlled environment, to find and understand God (and prove His existence or non-existence). I personally believe if there are concrete steps that can be replicated at will to find and understand God, then the concrete steps and the laws that govern these steps become more powerful than God - these steps and laws control God. God becomes bound by such natural laws, which does not conform to the definition of a monotheistic God. Personally I have no need for a god who is bound by natural laws, and would argue that such an entity is not even God. Some more thoughts related to these points can be found in my free ebook published earlier on Smashwords, Irrational, https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/918120.

Commentary:

This verse tells that God was our first friend, like a childhood friend. When a person becomes a devotee of God, God again becomes a friend to the person. This is a unique statement. God does not become an overlord to a devotee, which probably God could, but God establishes a relationship of companionship with His devotees. This is one of the ways by which a person could find his or her first friend, by becoming a devotee.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells more on the relationship between God and a human being. God is like a parent to human beings, and feeds and sustains them in His own different ways.

You might ask, why then do people die of hunger? I don't know. God has taken care of me well, that is all I can say. Probably people die of hunger because some people have been given free will to hoard agricultural land parcels, and hoard food produce for trade and profit; and such people exercise their free will to hoard and keep food away from others.

Probably the people who die of hunger did not preserve the harvest, to sustain them during winter when there will be no harvest. Earth and human life has its seasons, and a harvest in one season has to sustain people until the next harvest. I believe this is how this world works. Everybody understands this, but few act on it, because they have the free will to ignore the laws and ways of this world. But the laws of this world do not bend to accommodate human trespass.

Whatever be the reason for hunger and suffering in this world, my primary concern has been understanding my position in the larger scheme of things, and not exactly understanding the larger scheme of things themselves. So there is not much that I can say on matters concerning larger humanity in general.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 326:20-21]
=======================================
Commentary:

I believe these are very important lines concerning our lives. It tells that the primary reason why a human feels miserable is that one did not practice devotion in previous lives. This verse tells about the seasons of the soul. A soul eats the harvest in this life, that was planted in a previous season or life. If nothing useful was sown, then there will be no particularly useful harvest in this life.

A fish outside water feels suffocated, and unable to move freely. Many people feel trapped in their current lives also, much like a fish out of water. Trapped in places, jobs, family, financial and social obligations, unable to spend their days freely.

An indirect teaching of this verse is that in the season of this life, it will be wise for a person to sow devotion. Practice devotion to One God, which gives eternal harvest, enough to sustain a soul till eternity.

=======================================
Commentary:

The verses here explain different perspectives which are sometimes difficult to understand when taken together. The complexity of concepts related to human existence make use of analogies essential, and each analogy describe one aspect of existence, but seldom describe all aspects.

Present verse gives an analogy of being of the nature of a dog. A dog guards, is faithful and alert. These are qualities which are essential for practicing devotion also. A person has to guard one's mind from unnecessary thoughts of greed, anger, lust, attachment and pride. A person has to be faithful to the idea of being devoted to God, and not be swayed by other shallow promises. Finally a person needs to be alert to new developments which might shake a person's faith, and protect one's mind from constant attack of frivolous thoughts.

Please refer the last verse in the post, to get a different and more concrete perspective of the basic idea presented in this verse. Why exactly do we need to be alert when God controls everything in this world? Will not God take care? Please refer the last verse.

A more literal interpretation of this verse would be that a devotee also guards the intellectual concepts of a theological system. Presenting the ideas, giving clarifications, and answering questions about a system.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 969:30-31]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse tells of final state of a devotee. A state in which a ripple realizes that it is just part of a larger water body. A state in which a gold ornament realizes that it's essential nature is gold, irrespective of the form of the ornament. It is in this state that the devotee becomes one with God, and it is difficult to tell the difference between God and a devotee.

Many religious and spiritual systems describe different final states of a spiritual practice. Some promise heaven, some promise nirvana (freedom from transmigration), while others promise spiritual powers. All the possible states may not be mutually exclusive. As per my understanding the final stable state is union with God, a state where a person becomes indistinguishable from the Supreme Entity.

Using the previous analogies, a ripple will never be stable until it realizes that it is all of water, and it leaves its attachment to being a ripple. A gold ornament will never realize it is gold, same as in all other gold ornaments, unless it leaves its attachment to its present form. This form of spiritual practice is essentially about developing a percipient perspective and realization, rather than practicing rituals or discipline. Rituals and discipline can help develop discernment, but they are never the final goal.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 487:13-20]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse compares a human body to a clay puppet, and describes the normal state of a human being. Human body is made up of clay for most part, and after death the body merges back to Earth. Like a puppet show, the human body does all the actions like a puppet. As in a puppet show the human body displays pleasure on receiving good things, while it displays grief when it suffers a loss or when an illusion is broken.

The verse further speaks of the pleasures of mind, deed and words, that a person experiences during life, and asks the reader to ponder where does the person go at the time of death. Bhagat Ravidas finally tells that the world is a wager, a place where people place bets, bets with eternal consequence. He further tells that he is in love with the Architect of this world, God.

In this verse, the world is called a sport, a drama, a game, a wager, and God as someone who has set the game. It is difficult to know or understand why this would be so, but that is how it is. Of all the synonyms for word game, I believe the word wager is the closest translation.

Human civilization has progressed for hundreds of years, and made excellent progress, but the very basic questions of theology and spirituality still remain unanswered. I mean these questions have been answered, but there is no way to confirm whether the answer is correct or not. Some of the basic questions on purpose of human life, nature of human soul, and nature of God. People can spend their entire life pondering them, without making any progress on these questions, humanity has spent many centuries.

Many religions proclaim that human actions and choices in this life would affect a person's eternal destiny. And whatever choice a human being makes regarding spirituality or religious matters in this life, it is likely to be a function of faith, and not science. And this choice will have an eternal consequence. From this perspective, this life and world does look like a gamble, making a choice without enough information. The only certain way to win this gamble is to be friends with the One who owns the gambling house and is the Creator of the game. Be in love with the Creator, not because that is the only way to transcend this wager, but also because He has countless other qualities and is our only constant companion.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 133:9-18]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse give many different details about our existence. We have been separated from God due to our deeds and actions. Only God and God's home is steady in this world. And when a soul is tired of its eternal journey, or its eternal unsteady existence, it has to turn to God to find stability.

God has been described using many different words like Parent, Friend, Master and others depending on the context of the verse. In this verse God has been described primarily as a Husband. From a spiritual perspective a soul is considered to be a feminine entity (irrespective of the type of body that it resides in), while God is the only spiritual masculine entity**. So in this sense the union of God and a soul is much like a union between spouses, the only thing which will make the soul steady. Without God, all interactions of soul with others only bring it closer to death and transmigration (Jaam, sometimes pronounced yum, is the messenger of death).

The verse finally end with a prayer by Guru Sahib, requesting God to be merciful and grant His Name, and eventually unite us with Himself.

Translation: In this world, is One Man (Lord), other all are women (wife). Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 591:39" - As I understand this verse is that in essence God has no gender. But when souls manifest in non-physical plane, God is the only masculine principle, while all souls are feminine. While in physical plane souls inhabit bodies of both genders. This is just my understanding, and I hope I am accurate.

=======================================
Commentary:

This is a fascinating verse, and I believe very important to understand our position in this life. Shakespeare wrote, "All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players;", but it reduces role of people to actors, with no real consequences and make-believe problems.

I believe, as the above scripture tells us, "All the world's a wrestling arena, And all of us are wrestlers. Not fighting each other, but fighting five primal vices." The five vices, or temptations, are Kam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, and Ahankar (Lust, Anger, Greed, Attachment and Ego/Pride).

This is a metaphor describing a particular aspect of human existence, a constant struggle within and without, starting from birth and possibly ending at death. A human being is a wrestler who belongs to God, the Master. This life is a spiritual wrestling arena where victory or defeat could have eternal consequences. The five challengers are the fundamental vices who tempt a human being to commit sins, and eventually lose the match. The vices are the root of most of the sins that a human being commits, and not succumbing to their temptations is the primary spiritual battle each of us have to go through in this life. Also in this wrestling match the vices outnumber each one of us, so keeping like-minded good company helps in our battles.

As per my understanding, in traditional wrestling matches in India, the prominent wrestlers arrived on the arenas dressed in turbans and plumes, with accompanying flourish of trumpets and drums. Every person takes pride in following teachings of a Mentor, a Guru, and a high plume signifies the confidence and pride of the wrestler in the teachings of his or her Guru.

As with every wrestling match, there are consequences. There is victory or loss. There is hurt, and bleeding. And most importantly there are adversaries. Presence of a spiritual struggle is a common concept in many spiritual systems, and here we find that more specific details of the struggle have been described.

People ask why is there struggle and suffering in this life? One possible answer is that human life on Earth is a setup for a spiritual wrestling match, the parameters and conditions for which no player remembers till the time of the match. With full and proper knowledge there will be no real match, as people would know the consequences. The prize is eternal destiny of individual soul. Scriptures tell us that during our eternal journey, a soul rarely gets a chance to enter this human life, which is not unsurprising considering the eternal prize at stake.

In this spiritual arena on Earth, people accept teachings of one of the many available mentors, a Guru. And based on the teachings and understanding try to live their life in best way possible, keep vices at bay. Everybody watches the competition, including God Himself. A wrestler goes about life struggling with different vices and temptations, taking action, suffering the consequences of these actions and choices. Sometimes turning out victorious, and sometimes not.

When this wrestling match ends (when individual life ends), our future paths are reset depending on how each one of us perform in the match. Best way to win this match is to be a Gurmukh. Gurmukh is one who has face turned towards Guru, and follows the instructions of the Guru. Guru is a word for a mentor, and implicitly means that the Guru knows the correct path and gives correct instructions. Onus of finding a real Guru, or Teacher, is on each person. I try to follow the teachings of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, although I need to be a much better student.

Best way to lose the match is to be a Manmukh. Manmukh is one who has face turned towards self, towards own ego, and does what a person feels right. Implication being that human life is short, and a human being is unlikely to find real useful knowledge without finding a proper mentor, a teacher who could equip a person with useful knowledge and teaching to live this life, and defeat its various temptations.

The capital with which we enter this arena of human life is number of breaths for this life. For simplicity, I sometimes refer to this concept incorrectly as amount of time we have in this life, or moments in life. Scriptures tell us that when number of breaths are exhausted for an individual, the individual departs from this life (or arena). A Gurmukh is most likely to win something valuable in return for this life, while a Manmukh is most likely to lose the capital (spend life without getting anything in return). So human life is a spiritual wrestling match, with an accompanying wager!

To rally people in the Name of God

A favorite grouse of atheists and rationalists, when talking about religion or God, is that belief in religion and God has caused a lot of violence throughout history. The real answer may be more complex. In this post I would focus exclusively on monotheistic God and faiths. Non-monotheistic faith is not an area of my study or devotion.

During any war, short or extended, their is a great need for courage and also unquestionable obedience of the troops involved, be it a regimented army or a vigilante group or civilian mobs. And over the years people have found that rallying people in the Name of God is more effective than rallying for other causes or reasons. And it also costs less money, in fact people might act for free.

Mere mention of Will of God, or Name of God, has an affect on human mind. It triggers an urgent need to obey unquestionably and a lack of concern to the resulting consequence. It has for me at least, and maybe on other human minds also. Power lobbies everywhere have found this fact useful to rally people for their particular purpose. They have used words like 'For God' or 'In the Name of God' or some similar associated phrase as part of their campaigns, and added their particular concerns around these phrases, giving an impression that there is a Divine Sanction to their particular agenda, but which is seldom the case. In reality they may lack any concern for God's Will or His people, and only want to use God's Name as a catalyst. And who among us can claim to know the Will of God? Only a saint, or a delusional, or a liar, or whomever God chooses to reveal His words. This principle of influence would apply to any desired action, and not just war.

-
For the truly faithful,
God alone is enough,
God's Will is reason enough.

For the truly devious,
Or for the genuinely lost,
God alone is never enough,
God's Will is just a means,
To achieve a secondary goal,
To rally support for their concerns,
And concerns of people are many,
Concerns of kings, or queens, or nations,
Of lands and its people, of pride, or tribe,
And support for so many other things.
Human concerns are their own,
And remembering God can help,
Help them carry on in their quest,
But be aware, that God's concern is for all.

Many people of faith,
Have been led to violent wars,
And met with violent ends,
In the Name of God,
When not many knew,
What they were really fighting for.

Faithful lose way for lack of knowledge,
Knowledge of the Will of God.
If a person feels the need to serve,
Serve something more than God's purpose,
Know that the person may be lacking in faith.

It is important to realize that God does not need help,
Humans are in need of God's help,
If God needs a human to do His works,
Then probably it is not God.

And surely God does not need any help to fight His wars,
Nor to manifest His Will on Earth,
He may use humans, or anyone else for that matter,
But be aware that He is not in need.

We are helpless without God,
And not the other way round,
God does not need anybody to fight His wars,
We need God to fight our wars.

Anyone who uses God's Name,
To rally people to war or strife,
For an unjust or a wicked cause,
Know that blood is on their hands,
A cause is just or unjust as per Will of God,
And not by human choice or sanction,
And like most things in life,
Conscience and reason are our true guide.

Coming back to the original statement of this post. Are God and religion really responsible for death and destruction in society? For me the correct answer is 'No'! The correct answer may be that human beings are restless, and can go to any length to meet their objectives. Human beings have an insatiable desire for power, riches, glory and a lot of other things, and humans are crafty, very crafty indeed. They can use any possible reason to convince themselves and others of the justness of their particular cause, which may or may not involve violence. Some of the primary catalysts to move human beings to action are pride, honor, family, nationalism, divine will, race, caste, religion, greed, love, fear of loss, lust for power, hate, service of society, empathy, and many others. Of all these catalysts, God or Divine Will is the most potent, and power lobbies have found ways to mix their personal agendas with God's Will cleverly, so that it has become difficult for the faithful to discern the real motives behind different calls to action. Divine Will is a catalyst and not a reason for violence, and in absence of it, the power lobbies would have used some other catalyst to goad people to violence.
 -
If all religions preach peace,
But still there is war and strife,
In the Name of God and religion,
Then truly something is amiss,
More is hidden, lesser is known.

To seek knowledge is good,
But also seek discernment,
To see things as they truly are,
And not as you think they should be.

The one true religion!

What is the one true religion? Most will name their own. But most likely this question cannot be answered convincingly by most people. Once I have selected a religion to follow, then that becomes the only true religion for me to pursue. Others may choose other religions to pursue, which will become the only true religion for them. A person cannot travel on two boats, at least that is what I believe. Each person chooses on which boat to travel, and it will most likely be only one. Trying to travel on multiple boats may seem like a challenge, or socially polite, but I am not sure, for the waters can be deep.

I do not know the one true religion,
But I do know this,
Sun is not the only star,
Rose is not the only flower,
Lion is not the only animal,
Eagle not the only bird,
There are many cities,
There are many highways,
World is rich in choice,
But each choice has its own color,
Each choice has a consequence,
Free to choose, but own your choice,
For each choice will have a consequence,
Each choice leads to a destination,
Choose wherever you are willing to go,
There may be as many true paths,
As many the Creator wishes to create,
To insist otherwise would be to doubt the might of the Creator,
How many I do not know for certain, for I am just a human,
I am not privy to the Creator's mind,
Nor know all the nature's secrets.

Each religion has a theology and a philosophy, which may or may not overlap with other religions. But what each religion promises is a definite or an indefinite outcome for a practitioner who wishes to follow its path. Following are some of the different things promised by different religions to their followers:

  1. A peaceful or blissful present life
  2. A peaceful or blissful afterlife
  3. Liberation from transmigration
  4. Liberation from sin
  5. Eternal companionship with God
  6. Everlasting bliss
  7. Personal deification
  8. Fame in present life or afterlife
  9. Wealth in present life or afterlife
  10. Other material pleasures in present life or afterlife
  11. More esoteric things like higher consciousness which are difficult to understand
  12. Continuation of tradition, customs, and culture
  13. Appeasement of ancestors, society, spirits, authority, gods, or other real or imaginary things
  14. And maybe many other things...
A religion would generally promise a follower some of the above goals. So a follower needs to realize that focusing on some goals alone, may make the other things out of reach. Read the promises well, what is claimed and what remains hidden.

Now whether these claims are true or false I don't know. The belief in these claims started originally with the teachings of respective founders and prophets, and it is for each person to decide what to believe in and what not to believe in, what goal to pursue and what goal to leave, what path to follow and what path to leave behind.

The important thing here is to realize that apparently there could be everlasting consequences of the personal choice made by an individual. People might claim that all religions are same, and any could be followed. But studying about the different religions will give a person a more comprehensive perspective, and a better understanding about the goals of each religion. Saying all paths are same, may generally mean the person making this claim does not have much knowledge of any of the paths involved. I do know that different religious paths may promise different destinations to their followers, and have different deities and rituals, and it is up to each person what he or she wants to pursue in life. Where does a person want to invest or spend his or her life, and what return does a person expect from this investment in a lifelong faith? Is faith for an eternal goal, or for service of others, or for being one with the crowd? Where does your faith promise to take you?

There is a secondary and equally important question, after a personal destination (religion) has been decided by the person. The secondary question is, whether the path chosen will actually lead the person to the promised destination. This is a question which can only be answered in the seeker's mind, either by simply believing the teaching of the founders of religions, or by actually traveling the path, but few are known to reach the destination.

As with most things in life,
it is almost impossible to make a definite bet.
This is the ultimate gamble of life.
Where will you invest your life, on which belief?
Believe, or some would say bet, on what,
In ephemeral pleasure, or in pleasing society,
or maybe on mortal or eternal goals.
Welcome to the earthy casino of life,
Wheel is spinning, and the clock is ticking,
Destiny, the croupier with a wry smile invites you,
Invites you to place your bets,
Your eternal destiny is at stake,
For the price of this one life,
For the price of a decision and a belief,
Place your bet, for time is running out,
Time will run out, bet on an eternal consequence,
A consequence which each will meet alone,
Without the company of a friend or foe,
A consequence of suffering or bliss,
Indecision will not slow down the clock,
For some this gamble can be overwhelming,
And they may look the other way,
As they try to find meaning and reason,
Believing there is no substance in eternal fate,
But time will not stop, neither for me nor for you,
The game of life is already afoot,
Try not to let your mind fool you,
But who can claim to never have been fooled.

So like everything in this world, there is endless diversity. Each religion offers a path to follow and a destination. Paths may meet at some places, and may lead to similar or different destinations. Choose the path based on where you want to go. Each path may take you where it promises to go, and hope your map is accurate.

Know where you want to go before starting a journey,
If you do not know where your faith will lead you,
You might reach a place where you do not want to be,
 If a mentor refuses to explain in simple terms,
In simple words that do not confuse nor sting,
Then perhaps you are being taken for a ride.

Burden of proof?

One of the main point of contention between atheists and believers is that atheists insist that there is no conclusive and verifiable proof of the existence of God**. And they are correct, regarding objective proofs. Atheists claim that the burden of proof is on the believers to prove the existence of God.

Look at it from another perspective, if there is a verifiable objective proof of God's existence, then there would be no need for faith. If there is a verifiable proof, then everybody would believe in God, and fear God, and live a compliant life. Then not believing in God would be stupid and there would be no choice, no need for faith, no need for belief, as God's existence would be confirmed. A lot of drama in life would come to an end, many would even say that all drama in life would come to an end.

If the headmaster is present in a class and the children know it,
They will not speak nor play, and would be all nervous and frozen stiff.

But this is not how this world seems to have been setup. The elusive nature of God seems to be by design. Please take a moment to stop and think about this, because faith is not about choice but about eternal destiny. Atheists, or scientists, or rationalists, or others did not design the world in which we exist. Nor does the world in which we exist needs to conform to any logical model conceivable to the human mind.

With existence of an objective proof faith and belief cease to be a virtue. I am not saying that faith is a virtue, but to believe in concepts taught be the prophets unquestionably is an essential part of any religion. Certainly there is every chance that a person starts believing in a prophet whose teachings may or may not deliver on their promise, or the student may not understand the teaching properly, and that is a constant persistent doubt in most believers. This is as if it adds different colors to the religious and spiritual landscape of society. This complicates the choices further, but again this seems to be by design - Nature is characterized by presence of extreme variety, and presence of many different schools of thoughts also conforms to this.

Coming back to the question of proof. The system of belief in this world seems to be such that glimpses of the unknown have been conveyed to few people, who are generally identified as prophets. And stories tell us that after their respective revelation the prophets lives did change, as they lived in awareness of God's presence, while rest of the people around them went on with their normal life oblivious of God. The drama of the world continued for people who were unaware of God's presence. Some people did heed the words of prophets. For others the life's test is to sift through the available teaching and paths, and try to find a way.

Life presents an endless maze of words and ideas,
Walk carefully picking your treasures,
Treasures of words, and faith, and belief,
Leave the wrong turns and take the right ones.

 **In this blog, by word God, I always refer to the Monotheistic ever present and all powerful God, the Creator of the world. I do not refer to the many different deities present in the many cultures and religions unless specifically highlighted.

Limits to science... can science be applied to everything (specially spirituality)?

Science by definition needs objective peer review to confirm validity of a phenomenon. Anything which cannot be objectively measured, or at least subjectively measured/observed by considerable number of people, is considered false or unscientific. In the current post we consider limits to application of science** to spiritual and/or religious experience.

The verifiable criteria for science is its strength and also it's weakness. It is, in a way, democratization of reality (more precisely, "democratization of our understanding of reality"), which neutralizes any possibility of outliers as unscientific, an anomaly. If an artist feels exhilaration while painting or performing a musical piece, but other people do not while doing the same thing, then is the artist's exhilaration fake (or unscientific) as it is not verifiable objectively (plugging in measuring equipment, assuming it can measure subjective experience, may cause change in artist's body parameters, by virtue of being plugged in)?

Reliance on peer review, approval and verification, also brings up an interesting possibility that "anything which cannot be peer reviewed and verified is beyond the scope of science, and science cannot be used to explain such phenomena as it is not equipped for it."

To elaborate, the scientific method has, when applied to spirituality, following main subjective steps (taken from Wikipedia diagram titled, "The scientific method as a cyclic or iterative process"):
  1. Make observations
  2. Develop testable predictions
  3. Gather data to test predictions
Rest of the steps in the cyclic method are not considered for the purpose of present discussion. For the above steps, there is no reliable scientific equipment to measure subjective spiritual experience (not that I know of), and the human body/mind is the only way to make observations, gather data, and verify test results in such scenarios. The variations of human mind/body/mood/training/environment is so vast that it is difficult to measure any type of data reliably and make predictions. The same people attending the same classes display different characteristics. Experimental psychology and psychiatry have a very high level of approximation.

To add to the complexity of verifying spiritual experience, by definition spiritual experience has very low chance of manifesting itself (not everybody trying to hear from God does hear from God, but stories of prophets tell that they did hear from God, but it seemed like a special privilege).

In a nutshell, the problem of applying science to spiritual/religious experience is "How can science be used to verify and explain sparsely occurring phenomena, for which there is no definite method to collect positive data" (positive data is that which can confirm the phenomena). We can say that a phenomena is just hearsay, or superstition because millions tried to get an experience but failed. But we need to remember that even if one of the persons who claim to have a spiritual experience is telling the 'truth', then it is real. And so perhaps the fact is that science is not mature enough to be applied to this particular set of problems.

Science is a very reliable hammer, but not every problem in the world is a nail.

Some religious and spiritual experience reported by few outliers may come in this category. No doubt there are more than enough false claims to fool the gullible, but even if there is a single 'genuine' claim, is that not a reason enough for further investigation.

To recap - as highlighted above, the most common equipment used to measure a subjective experience is the human body/mind itself. And going by the differences (physical and psychological) in the human body/mind as a measurement tool, there is a high degree of possibility that even true claims may remain unverifiable. How many times does it happen that in a jungle safari only a few people of the group may catch glimpse of an elusive animal in the act of a hunt, never to be seen again for a long time. Professional photographers have to pitch tent for years before they are able to get truly detailed pictures in some cases. How many of scientists are willing to pitch tent with same amount of patience for a glimpse of the unexplained, specially when there is no likelihood of getting a funding? Human subjects cannot measure/observe in equal capacity. This shortcoming is generally overcome by increasing number of subjects whose feedback is considered to reduce error and personal bias. But is voting a science (I called it voting because beliefs could potentially alter experience, so even if a person votes honestly, they might have experienced different things because of different beliefs)? Basically conventional science has little place for subjective phenomena, which is generally identified as an anomaly, but highlights the limitation of science also.

Another interesting aspect of a scientific claim is that it has to be falsifiable. So in effect all theories are true until we get sufficient data to disprove it, basically a theory is waiting to be invalidated as more data is gathered. A scientific theory is waiting to be replaced by a better theory. This brings up another interesting question - Can science really be used to explain and address absolute facts (absolute truths), as it might seem that there is no (or little) space for absolute facts/truths in science?**
-x-

**Note: My knowledge of the "philosophy of science" is limited, but it is an interesting subject which deals with what science is and how reliable it can be. I would encourage rationalists (and atheists), the self proclaimed champions of science, to spend time understanding where science can be applied or cannot be applied, before they "bet the ranch" on reason and science.
-x-

PS: The above post does not cover a person applying the scientific method on self, and systematically trying to understand personal experience which are of a spiritual/religious nature. I believe this should be possible (because the data gathering equipment remains same, the body and mind of self), but what may not be as effective is trying to get the resulting theories, which came out of personal experience, verified by the wider scientific community. So there is always the risk of misunderstanding a personal experience, due to lack of peer-verification.

This may well be a path on which you have to walk alone,
For if you seek the comfort of company,
Know that you might be on a different path,
You alone need to convince your mind,
Of the truth that you can perceive,
But if you do find a like mind, do not forget gratitude.
