Which religion or sect to follow (the right conduct to practice)?

Main points:
  1. Dharma is popularly translated as religion, but more specifically it could mean recommended conduct for proper living and other actions. Most religions have multiple sects and denominations with different practices for each sect or denomination. Many of the practices could be very different between sects and denominations, even within same religion.
  2. The sect, or denomination which recommends building faith and chanting Name of God is best and safest to follow. There are many sects within different religions which recommend building faith in Name of God.
  3. God referred in this article and all other essays in this blog is One God, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, who is the Creator of all there is, and has no equal.
  4. Any other actions or practices recommended by a particular sect may have its own purpose and may exist due to social, cultural or historical reasons. Such recommendations would have their own benefits or consequences, and evaluating them is beyond the scope of this article. Each person needs to decide for oneself. But developing belief in God's Name is minimum possible, necessary and effective recommendation. A note of caution, there are many systems built around many diverse concepts, with a lot of different practices mixed together for more effective proselytization and not for spiritual growth.
  5. Second part of recommendation is to do pure actions. The only measure of a pure action is whatever action is acceptable or liked by God. As per my understanding action performed under direction from one's ego is tainted and unlikely to be pure. Actions done without being under influence of ego are acceptable.
  6. Ego, or a very proud and personal mental posturing, could be killed if one accepts teachings of a True Guru. Under effects of ego a person would have difficulty in accepting teachings of a particular scripture.
  7. The reason for performing above religious practice is not only obedience to scripture or God, as is popularly described in culture. But another important reason is that without performing the above actions, the natural laws would bind a person (soul), and may result in an unpleasant experience for a person, sometimes extending till eternity.
-x-

For people who might think that above practice is very self-centered, they should realize that world continues with or without any person or thing. A view to the contrary may be misplaced pride or conceit, making people think that the world depends on them, or that they have an obligation to the world. A lot of great people have come, done great work, and gone, but life continues without them. World will continue to have more people, but you and me may have only one life.

It is true that proper functioning of society is based on different work being performed by different people, and reasonable responsible action performed by each of us is good for us and society. But beyond basic constructive involvement, beyond natural calling, which could involve social service and sacrifice for some people, it may just be pride or exploitation, if there is a feeling of conceit or obligation. And everybody contributes in their own way for growth of society, and comparisons are mostly futile. A lone researcher developing a medicine, a banker raising money to finance mass-production of the medicine, or a social-worker administering medicine to the impoverished, everybody contributes.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 266:40-49]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse gives details of few desirable endeavors. The foremost religious and spiritual practice is to chant the Name of God and perform pure actions. Pure actions are actions done without the influence of ego or sense of ownership, or in other words, actions are pure if they are not corrupted and directed by ego.

The verse tells that best ritual is to remove false thinking by interacting with holy people. Best efforts that a person can make in life is chanting the Name of God. Best speech is God's praise. Best place is where God's Name is chanted and remembered.

=======================================
Commentary:

In this verse some important questions are asked and answered. Questions like, what efforts should one make, how can a person develop devotion to God, what is right religious practice, what Name to chant? The verse specifies that the Vedas answer above questions, and also tell the most effective way of achieving salvation. The answer is to chant the Name of God.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse begins with question regarding most effective conduct for present age, for a person who desires salvation. Again chanting the Name of God is recommended. The Name of God will act as a raft for the soul, which will preserve honor of a person. If a person lacks devotion or faith in Name of God, a person could pray for receiving the same.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse reiterates importance of Name of God, and also introduces an important concept of accepting things as they are. Another article would cover the details of accepting things as they happen. Accepting things that are fortunate or unfortunate for us personally, or for others, or for larger society and civilization. Last statement is a view point easily misunderstood, and sometimes can be abused in arguments. But the fact is that there is no choice in things that have already occurred, as past events cannot change, but can ruin our present and future if people carry a grudge. People can act to change things for present or in future, but for past there is no choice except mentally accepting them.

=======================================
Commentary:

This verse introduces another concept of one of the benefits of chanting the Name of God, which helps mind get rid of ignorance, and would be covered in detail in another article. It is important to note that not all chanting and meditation is equal, and the object or words of meditation and chanting make all the difference.

On whose forehead God puts blessing,
Nanak, such people come in saint's refuge.||7||

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 296:8-17]
=======================================
Commentary:

Some of the different Names of God actually describe different qualities of God, and all are good. Any Name of God can bring salvation to a person in any age or time. Ancient Indian scriptures describe that the complete essence of dharma is contained in the Name of God. I understand it as respecting Name of God, building faith in God's Name, and chanting the Names in praise of God. Why this would work would be covered in some other articles.

It is true that religion and spirituality teaching today has become much more complicated than the essence, and it is up to individual person to decide what path to follow. A person is free to decide and choose for oneself, and the consequences of personal choice are also for the person alone, to enjoy or to suffer.

Commentary:

Remembering God in company of other believers helps people to sail through grief and sorrows. This is considered good conduct, great dharma. It is also an act of charity as people spend some moments of their limited lifetime in holy company, collectively remembering the Name of God for mutual benefit.

Translation:
The service to a Guru is pondering over His word,
Kill your ego, essence of action.||7||

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 223:40-41]
=======================================
Commentary:

This and the next verse cover the second part of the recommendation. What is a pure action? The verse recommends killing one's ego, the sense of doership for performing pure actions. The point that I have understood about action is that many actions are inevitable, and are needed for proper functioning of body, and society. For voluntary actions also creating a list of actions that are good or bad is not possible, because use and purpose of action changes with situations.

What one thing could we change about action, that would be applicable to all actions, is changing our perspective. Some of the most important functions of body we do involuntarily without actual control, like digesting food, beating heart, and others. The spiritual perspective is to extend that concept to all actions, because soul and body are two different things. We, the person or the soul, are responsible and in control of our thoughts and mind, but a lot of actions of the body are out of our control, much like a lot of actions of a vehicle are out of our control, even if we are riding the vehicle. More details in next verse.

Another important concept is discussed in the above verse. True service of a spiritual teacher and mentor, is to ponder over the teachings of the teacher and learn from them. Many people would give external respect to a mentor, but few make efforts to understand the teachings. Specially if a teacher has passed on, while words of the teacher remain with us, if such is the case then respectfully pondering and learning from the teaching and words of the mentor is an important service to the teacher.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Page 278:49-58]
=======================================
Commentary:

My understanding of the concept of actions presented in above verse is different from few popular concepts of performing actions. The basic point is that soul being a intangible entity, soul's actions are also intangible, which are thoughts, words, feelings, prayers, ambitions, and other mental activities. A person, or intangible soul, is only responsible for its intangible actions, unless it takes ownership of the actions performed by its body, becomes attached with them.

Physical actions performed by physical body only count in the physical realm. A soul is responsible and suffers due to actions of the body only if the soul is attached to the actions performed by the body, else the physical actions are just part and parcel of the natural bodily existence. A soul which binds itself to things of this world will face transmigration, and also suffer when things do not go as desired. Till a person thinks that a person does something, till then a person would be unstable, vacillating between joy and suffering

A person is as responsible for actions of own body, as the activities of a vehicle or a cab that it is riding. Person is only inside a cab until the end of a ride, and as long as the person does not cause any laws to be broken during the ride it is all OK at the end of the ride to leave the vehicle. But a soul is responsible for everything that goes on in the mind. If we think about it, the relationship between a rider and driver is very complicated to that of a vehicle that it is riding/driving, with multiple choices at multiple levels. Question of free will and achievement become very complicated if we consider the above analogy.
Soul is on a very mortal ride with its body,
The body will last for a single lifetime.
When a trip is over, or the life is at an end,
The body leaves the cab, and soul leaves the body.

That is all there is to it,
Unless a soul ties itself,
With mindless attachments,
To the body or the cab.

When a person becomes over-ambitious and uses the body for non-essential activities, as an expression of unreasonable personal ambitions, sometimes unnatural, then the actions and their consequences, called karma, eventually bind the person (soul).
To stab someone is a crime of the body,
An unkind word is a crime of the soul,
To kill someone is a crime of the body,
Breaking a heart is a crime of the soul.

Discipline of the body will not fix the soul,
Nor will flight of soul be hindered by a body,
Unless the soul seeks to bind itself,
To the limits and actions of the body.
Thoughts, words, attachments, feelings,
Bind the mind and the soul.

Purpose of life

Main points:
  1. Purpose of human life is to plant the Name of God in one's mind and consciousness. The planted Name will eventually sprout to affection, love and companionship with God, which is eternal wealth. Purpose of human life is to earn this eternal wealth.
  2. Above purpose of human life does not mean that a person should not do anything else - what a person does or does not do is a matter for another post. It means that the above purpose should be the central point around which a person builds one's life, but a person is free to do normal regular work, and is advised to keep remembrance of God at all times.
  3. Reading, and listening to words of wisdom help to fortify one's devotion. Singing or listening to praise of God also helps.
  4. A person needs basic life comforts like healthy food and comfortable lodging to be able to find reasons, time and leisure to perform devotional worship.
  5. If a person lacks the basic amenities for living, then it is fine to pray to God to provide the same, which will enable a person to live a comfortable life and practice devotion.

=======================================
Commentary:

This lifetime is correct time to plant the Name of God in a person's consciousness and mind, and this is the primary purpose of human life. Season of human life is suitable for this purpose, and any other activity if it takes prominence during this lifetime will not have much use, as it will most likely not be suitable for the season of a human lifetime. The Name planted in a person's consciousness will eventually sprout to create affection and love for God. Affection and closeness to God is a wealth, a companionship which has eternal value, and will be useful for a person in this life as well as till eternity. The process of planting a Name in consciousnesses is like planting anything else in mind, remembering the Name, chanting the Name, realizing its importance, listening and reading about it.

A person always has a choice of doing a lot of possible things, but other tasks may have no eternal value as they could be considered out-of-season for human life. Planting Name may or may not be an exclusive activity, but needs to be a primary activity, important enough that mind realizes the importance of Name.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1219:30-35]
=======================================
Commentary:

As the season of human life is suitable for developing affection for God, listening and reading words which give truly useful and valuable knowledge needs to be one of the primary activity in human life. Saints share knowledge and stories which talk of things that cannot be explained, as a lot of spiritual experiences are difficult to explain in words and needs to be experienced personally. But still the saints describe experiences and stories in a way that people can get benefit after reading the texts. It is difficult to tell who is a saint, or who is not, as a true definition of a saint is a person who God makes and accepts as a saint.

Many spiritual and religious systems talk about Salvation and Nirvana, which is an escape from a possibly undesirable afterlife. Remembering Name of God is the simplest and most effective way to escape a possibly undesirable afterlife, but there is more. Name of God also ensures a pleasant eternity. Discipline, strength and wisdom to chant the Name is given by God, and if a person lacks it, then a person could pray for receiving the same.

Commentary:

Many people believe that living a spiritual life involves becoming a monk and avoiding an active involvement in society or profession. Some people in mainstream society believe that if everybody starts living a spiritual life then people will be unproductive. The above verse gives a reasonable approach from both perspectives. Society, whether mainstream society or monastic life, is based on division of labor, dividing necessary tasks among inhabitants and making the community functional.

When Bhagat Tirlochan challenges Bhagat Nam Dev on latter's involvement in a profession, Bhagat Nam Dev replies that hands and feet keep doing all the necessary work, while mind internally remains focused on God's remembrance. This implies that any necessary work that a person needs to do to meet the needs of life are done, but keeping God's remembrance always in mind.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 656:37-54]
=======================================
Commentary:

This verse records a conversation between Bhagat Kabir and God. Bhagat Kabir tells God that it is not possible to do devotional worship with a hungry stomach and while living in discomfort. For a comfortable life Bhagat Kabir requests for basic ration of food, and bedding for rest. Once basic needs of life and mind are satisfied then Bhagat Kabir says that now it is possible to do devotional worship.

A few important things that I understand from this verse are that if a person has some discomfort and finds it difficult to perform devotional worship, then it is absolutely fine to pray to God for providing rations, as long as a person is not greedy. A satisfied body and mind has more reasons to be grateful to God than a dissatisfied one. Once a mind is grateful to God, it acknowledges God's power and when a mind accepts God only then it is possible for a person to know God.

A concept of feet-dust is referred in the above verse. Literally speaking it refers to dust that is settled on a person's feet, or maybe also the small dust cloud raised while a person walks. Literal interpretation would mean that a person humbles oneself before a saint, not only physically but mentally also, enough to be able to accept the teachings of saints. But it is difficult to find and identify a saint, unless a person is very lucky, so teachings of saints are a substitute. Non-literal meaning as I understand it is that feet-dust of saints refers to teachings derived from words of Saints. In many Indic languages a word for feet and word is same, पद or pad, and from this perspective feet-dust would mean words of saints which contain their wisdom and guidance.

[Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1219:9-10]
=======================================
Commentary:
Anything which strengthens love for God is like an elixir which gives eternal life and wealth, including listening to sermons, singing praise of God, and chanting Name of God. So collecting eternal wealth of God's Name is true purpose, while other kind of wealth is an illusion which a person will lose at time of death.

Translation:
One who works hard to earn a living, gives some of what one has,
O Nanak, such a person knows the way.||1||
[Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1245:47-48]
=======================================
Commentary:

While developing devotion is true purpose, but daily physical requirements also need to be met, so working hard in an honest profession is recommended. One who does honest hard work to earn a living, while also sharing some of whatever one has, such a person knows the true path.

This verse appears as part of a larger verse which refers primarily to people who preach wisdom to others. The ones who do honest work, share something of what they have, are more likely to know the correct way, than other preachers (irrespective to any particular sect or religion). As per my understanding, the same principle could be extended to other people also, and apply not just to preachers or guides.

With reference to people who preach (in any religion or sect), the professional preacher is a very respectable and privileged position. Professional preachers may be very knowledgeable and have good intentions, but being in a privileged position there are chances that they may never have encountered some type of difficult situations in life, that an average person encounters during daily life. Average people balance multiple things in life; work, family, finances, loans, social obligations, discrimination, etc, etc, without any special privilege, support, love, or respect coming their way, and if they want to learn about squeezing spiritual practice in their already busy life they may find a fellow worker's teaching more practical and easier to follow.

Translation:
Kabir, if you have to steal, steal the Name of God,
Otherwise you will regret later, when the life is lost.
[Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1366:24-25]
=======================================
Commentary:

In this verse stealing has another non-literal meaning, as per my understanding. In this life a person earns and accumulates many things, family, friends, wealth, knowledge, and all of it is lost when a person dies, lost to the dying person. Death in a way is the ultimate robber, which takes a life's earning, including material and non-material wealth, from a person. So a person cannot really take anything from this world, except the Name of God. Name of God embedded in our consciousness and memory. In this sense, when we become aware of the Name of God, its power and are devoted to the Name, we take it from this world, in a way robbing the ultimate robber, death.

Another way to understand this verse would be to consider Death as a gatekeeper. The eternal gatekeeper, who ensures that a person leaves everything behind when a person dies. Except the Name of God, hidden deep in one's consciousness because a person cherishes and respects the Name of God. In this sense, the Name of God is the only thing that is can be robbed and is worth robbing in this life, and the eternal gatekeeper will not be able to take it away from us.

Commentary:

This might probably be a controversial topic, but an important one. It is widely believed in popular culture, and it is also scientifically acceptable, that we come to this world without anything, and leave without anything. "Empty handed we come, and empty handed we go", is the popular saying in Hindi to convey this (i.e. "Kahli haath ayae hain, khali haath jana hai"). I believe this is correct in some aspects, but not completely accurate.

As per my understanding, the corrected saying should be, "Whatever materialistic things we are born with, or earn during this lifetime, we leave it all behind". Basically, we are born with a body which is left behind on deathbed. We earn degrees, money, inheritance, knowledge, friends, family, big and small pleasures, and many other things during our life, and almost everything we lose after death.

Philosophically speaking we could say, that death robs us of everything we have gained during this lifetime. Almost everything we lose, but whatever we take from this life is the topic of this article. More specifically, what is the minimum possible useful asset that we can take from this life, that will be useful and helpful to each of us.

Not everybody starts life on equal footing. Some are born rich and healthy, others may not be born with such privileges. There is apparently some difference while being born, but this essay is not to ponder on what we brought into this world, that is already done. At the minimum we come with a life, a body, and remain here until our life is spent.

Spiritually speaking few of the intangible things that we earn during this life are knowledge and the load of unbalanced account of our actions (thoughts are actions too). Knowledge could itself be of the material world, or could be of spiritual matters. Not all action is equal, nor all knowledge is equal, and some may be useful or helpful.

While there is no limit to actions one can do, and no limit to all the knowledge one can gain. There is little knowing what action or what knowledge will have eternal value. I believe the only possible and helpful asset that one can take from this world and life is the "Name of God".

Scriptures tell us that after death when a person moves on from this life all alone, with "nothing", no friends, helpers, family, then the Name of God would be an eternal friend, family and a helper. Afterlife would be easier if we have the Name of God as a friend, an asset. In fact, one of the purposes of human life is that we get a chance to understand this and act on this knowledge.

Following are a few questions that might come to mind:

>>How do we know that the Name of God would be helpful? I don't know. Scriptures claim this fact, and I share my understanding of scriptures, and I believe my understanding is correct. Each person has to decide for oneself.

>>Does any other scripture specify greatness of the Name of God? Yes. The Holy Bible has a verse, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." [Romans 10:13]. Do not forget that the verse states "everyone" without any other qualification.

>>How do we know what is the right Name of God? As per my understanding, any Name which refers to The Supreme being is precious, and an asset. Many monotheistic religions use many different Names to refer to The Supreme Being, and the Name that one is most comfortable is OK.

>>How do we know we will remember the Name of God when it is time? This is the hard part. The hardest, maybe. There are many prerequisites, and then too it is difficult to be sure. Please note that scriptures tell us that if a person is able to remember the Name of God, even without meeting the prerequisites the person is still saved.Why?

--
The power resides in the Name of God,
Not in the human discipline or actions.
 --

The remembrance is easier if we fulfill the prerequisites. First prerequisite is that a person has to believe, without a doubt, in an All Powerful, Supreme Creator of the world who has no equal. A belief in a limited deity is not prescribed as per my understanding. A believer needs to believe that God is able and willing to save a person. This prerequisite alone could be a labor of a lifetime for a thinking and logical person, because there is no acceptable proof of God's existence.

Second prerequisite is that the person should believe in the power of the Name of God. The difficulty here is in the simplicity of the belief. How could something be so simple? How could a word, a Name be so powerful? How could a Name save? How could something as simple as a name be so powerful? I don't know. But that is how it is. And I have my reasons to believe. I hope you find your reasons to believe. Maybe pray, think, experiment, and pray some more!

There are many reasons, and many aspects to the power of the Name of God. One of my personal reasons is, that I personally believe, that power of God manifests wherever God is remembered, whenever we call out to God. I mean we cannot force it to happen, but generally this should be the case. And easiest way to remember someone is speak the name of a person earnestly, verbally or mentally. In fact, one of the things that happens when we remember someone is that we automatically think of the name of the person. And if we hear a name, we automatically remember the person being named. So the Name of God helps us remember God.

Third and final prerequisite is that during this lifetime one plants the Name of God in one's own consciousness (or mind, or whatever we like to call it). This is done by listening, speaking, thinking and/or remembering. Listening, speaking, thinking and/or remembering can include specific tasks like reading, discussing, chanting, and doing other activities related to God and Name of God. It is difficult to fake it, and if we do not believe or respect God we will have difficultly in giving space in our mind to God's remembrance. This is the reason why we say that monotheistic spirituality is more about working with the mind and beliefs rather than rituals, i.e. accepting the truth about God enough so that we open ourselves to take help from God.

>>Is there anything more to the Name of God, or this is all? Yes, a lot more. Hopefully other articles may cover some aspects of the Name of God.
